AS2 EDI Integration with BizTalk Server

This fast growing logistics company needed a way to send transactions to Wal-Mart, Target, Lowes and others without incurring expensive VAN (Value Added Network) charges. BizTalk Server was the answer.

 Business Need

One of the country’s leading third-party logistics, transportation and supply-chain solution providers needed a more efficient and cost effective way of handling thousands of B2B EDI transactions with a multitude of business partners.  They also needed to support all of their EDI processing over AS2 in-house to increase their customer visibility and decrease expenditures associated with their B2B communication.  The final solution would need to support additional growth not only with their B2B partners but additional internal growth with their EAI and ESB solutions.

 Solution

Vision

Create a highly available, high performance and scalable EDI processing architecture that utilizes AS2 connectivity while increasing EDI transaction visibility, decreasing expenditures, increasing B2B time to market solutions and improving the efficiency and timeliness of addressing problems with customer EDI transactions.

Architecture

The architectural foundation included the creation of a highly available, scalable and high performance EDI processing BizTalk Server 2009 environment.  The architecture included four BizTalk Server 2009 servers leveraging built-in load-balancing where the server functional identities were delineated between sending and receiving transactions and processing transaction.  In addition, an active/passive SQL Server 2005 environment was utilized to support the BizTalk Server 2009 architecture.

 Benefits

This solution was a part of the overall strategy to expand the customer's suite of products and services with their B2B trading partner portfolio as well as decrease overall operating costs.   The goal of the selected architecture included the creation of a highly available, scalable EDI processing environment supporting mission-critical transactions.  As a side benefit, the customer increased visibility with their trading partners, decreased expenditures with EDI processing, and increased efficiency and timeliness of addressing problems with customer EDI transactions.
